Working With What We Have

If you are not aware with what is going on in my life right now you need to go back and read the last couple posts.  Of course, you may want to start three posts back because that is where I am giving away the YurBuds which are one of the latest hot items for runners who like their music and or podcasts on the run.

The ice in Atlanta is getting better, but not fast enough.  Friday will mark the fifth day in a row that the schools have been closed and the kids are going crazy.  My daughters and I are also getting antsy since we have not been able to get a run in for the last couple days.  We did run in the snow on Monday, before everything turned to ice, but the ice has made it just too dangerous to run on the roads.

I also have not been to the office this week before today.  I decided that today would be the day that I got out and braved the icy roads.  I assessed the roads again today and decided that they were still not safe to run on so we were looking for options when the idea of running on the treadmill at work came up.  I offered to take my girls to the office as well and let them do some shopping in the nearby mall, and then get their run in on the treadmill in our building.  The only downside was that they would have to hang around till I finished the day and of course get a run in myself.

Everything went as planned and they got their run in just before lunch.  They hung out and watched a movie while I finished work and headed down to the treadmill myself.  I ended up getting 4 long miles in on the treadmill.  It was OK for the first 1/4 mile and the rest was just a drag.  I am just not a treadmill runner, but we are working with what we have and making the best of it.

Are you a treadmill runner?  Do you hit the treadmill only when you have no other option (like me) or are you a regular treadmill runner?

  1. Ugh. We had a few days like this around Thanksgiving. It's hard to be out of your routine when it wasn't planned. Way to go thinking outside the box...er...house.

  2. Living in New England I sometimes run on the t-mill at the gym. I travel for work and run on hotel t-mills when I don't know the area, or if it's just too darn cold (like in the teens)!
Gotta do what we gotta do!!! :)

  3. I just became an owner of one. Still rehab-ing here and have not been able to use it yet. I agree - make use of what we have when we need to. I plan on becoming a TM runner as I return from surgery. The road conditions are horrible here every winter and I really dont want to damage what the doctor fixed.

After that - planning on using it only when the weather is too risky to run in.

  4. I call it the "dreadmill"! Here, up North in Montreal, Canada the weather can be pretty unpredictable, especially in the winter. Snow, freezing rain, wind, etc. I hit the dreadmill in my building's gym at least once a week when the weather is to fowl to run outside. Playing with the elevation will get you a pretty good workout, and cut the boredom of it. The longest I have done is a long run of 7 miles. Thank goodness for good music!

  5. Hate the treadmill, with a passion! But my husband travels a fair amount, so by default I have one in my basement. I avoid it whenever possible, however!

  7. Reading all of your comments it sounds like you are all pretty close to how I feel about the "dreadmill" If I have to I will, but not if I can find any other option. We do what we gotta do!

Now, if I had one in my basement, and had a TV in front of it, it might get tempting on the really cold mornings, but if I can go outside and not fall from the ice, I will always pick the roads.... always!

Now I understand how some of you, ok, most of you, need to every once in a while. For us here, we almost never have a reason when we must do it, except for this week :(

Thank you everyone for stopping by, keep those comments a coming! :)

  8. I did 14 miles on the dreadmill once last year training for my first marathon. Terrible experience, but at least I got my run in. I do have one in the basement, so it's not nearly as bad as having to do it at a gym. I do okay up to about 8 or 9 miles, but after that it is torture. I made the best of it by watching a long movie and then some music.

It looks like I will be doing my 10-miler on the dreadmill today since my usual route on the road is still pretty perilous.
