Run for your life

This past Wednesday morning was like any other morning.  I was running up and down the same roads I have run hundreds of times in the past.  It was about 5:50 when I was coming around the same corner I have come around many times before.  The road was dark and I was wearing my reflective vest and flashing red light for visibility.  This morning was going to be a little bit different, and serves as a reminder why we run into traffic and not with it.

Ankle - please straighten up!

This week started off to be a week that I was looking forward to.  This Saturday was going to be the return of the race that last year put me out of running commission for 8 months.  You can see my post just last week for more information and the history of this race for me.

Monday and Tuesday this week were some nice easy runs, and I decided to follow on Wednesday with an 8 miler.  Since I will be running the 5k race on Saturday night it gives no time for a long run.  If I was running the 5k race in the morning I would probably head back out later in the evening for a long run, but since it is in the evening I want to make sure I am fresh.

My 8 mile run was excellent, I really couldn't ask for a much better run.  Each mile was progressively faster than the previous mile and I was just feeling the groove.  You can see the details of this run on my training log.

It wasn't till the last 3 tenths of a mile that this run turned horribly wrong.  I came down on my right foot and my ankle kinda gave way and started to hurt.  The only thing I can think is that I put off replacing my old shoes for way too long and my ankles had started to bother me.  I have my new shoes now, and my ankles have been feeling better, but I am afraid they are still a little weak and will take a little time to fully recover.

By the time I got to the office on Wednesday my right ankle was hurting pretty bad.  I do have a desk job so I was able to rest it most of the day and by the time I got home it was feeling a lot better.  I decided to go ahead and forego the runs I had in the plans for Thursday and Friday to let the ankle strenthen up before my race on Saturday.  It is feeling pretty good now.

Do you ever have problems with your ankles?  What do you do when you have this type of pain with your ankle?  Looking forward to hearing from all my seasoned runners, and even those that are just starting out.  Should I wrap it for the race tomorrow night, and if so, how should I do so?

Till next time....

A bum ankle

Friday I went out for a run and my ankle gave out on me just 1/2 mile in. I have not run since and my ankle has been hurting. Not sure what caused this, but it has happened before about 18 months ago. Usually I just have to wait until it snaps/cracks and then it is on the mend. That happened about 3:00 this morning on one of my trips out of bed - yes, I am getting older :)

I wasn't going to run this morning so I went to the gym to do some lifting instead. I decided to give my ankle a shot on the treadmill. I was just going to walk but it felt good so I kicked it up to a run. It felt good and didn't have any pain.

I will continue to watch it and be careful though, I am not sure I am quite out of the woods yet.... it was just one mile :)

Stress is a four letter word

OK, stress isn't a four letter word, but it is not one of my favorite words right now either. However, My life right now could have a little less of it right now.

Work is really stressful right now as I have a big project that I have been working on for months that is due on Monday. I am a Application Developer and my life has been wrapped up in this current application while trying to learn a new technology to complete it. Needless to say this has caused a lot of delays, and stress. I have been working most nights, in addition to all day every day, including some weekends over the past couple weeks. This weekend will be one of those weekends that will require work as well.

Now enter race weekend. I am not sure how things work out the way they do sometimes, and why everything has to hit at the same time, but I guess it is to make us stronger. I had a very good run this past Sunday, and was feeling really good about this coming Saturday's race. Tuesday I went out for my 4 miler, and things seemed to go OK, but the first mile my ankle was bothering me a little bit. Not bad like last time, and it didn't bother me at all the rest of the run. However, it is feeling a bit weak still this morning. I am stretching and icing, and it doesn't feel horrible, but I am concerned.... and yes stressed on how it will hold up this Saturday.

Yes, I am fairly confident that this ankle pain is a result of me not replacing my shoes yet. I know I have too many miles on my shoes (based on recommendations) but I didn't have the extra $ back a month ago when I realized this, and by the time I got the $ it was too close to race day to try and switch to new shoes. I think I am paying for that now, when in fact I should have literally paid for them back a month ago. I know there is nothing I can do about this now, but I know what I will be doing once I get through the race this Saturday. So, now I am wondering..... do I run my last 4 miles on Thursday, or do I let my ankle rest till race time....... Hmmmmm, not sure what I should do.

Yes, I am getting the pre-race jitters. Everything is not going bad, but the stress at work with this new stress of my ankle acting up has got my head spinning. On a brighter note, the forecast has again changed and shows the rain holding off until Sunday. I think we are close enough now that this will probably not change too much, so I am happy about that. The forecast is calling for cloudy and 63 with 20% chance of precipitation. I don't think it could be much better than that. So what is the ankle forecast? I won't know till race day... :(

**Edit** I wanted to edit this post and include a picture of my shoes. I am not sure what they looked like when they were new, but they look like they are slanting to the outside. Based on the wear on the bottom of the shoes that is where the wear is also. I am sure this means they are way overdue for replacement, I just didn't realize they were this bad. I have probably close to 450 miles on them. I have logged 325 miles, and I trained for and ran a 5k and 10k before I started logging. I am sure based on how they look that they are the reason for my ankle problems and probably all the other little aches and pains I have been having recently. If only I would have done what I knew I should have done a month ago. :(

The Morning After

Well, after yesterdays Disappointing Mile, I was a bit anxious and timid with this mornings run. My ankle was a little tight this morning, but was fine all afternoon and evening so I figured it was just tight from running on it yesterday when something wasn't right. I stretched and stretched, and then stretched one more time to see how everything was feeling. If it didn't feel great I was not going to run.

Everything was feeling great so I headed out the door and walked to the starting block (OK, the corner) Once the light turned from red to green (OK, I got my little flashing red light turned on) and official clock had been started (OK, just my cheap watch) I was off.

I paid really close attention as I ran and everything seemed good. I ran the first 3 miles pain free, and then for about 3 steps my right ankle was a little weak. I was very pleased to see it pass as quickly as it came. The rest of the run went really good. I got home and stretched, and stretched, and then stretched some more.

I am sure my ankle is a little weak because of running the mile on it yesterday when it was hurting, but this mornings run was very encouraging.

The Disappointing Mile

Yes, the disappointing mile. I went out for my scheduled 4 miles this morning and it didn't take but 1/4 mile before I knew something was wrong. My right ankle was hurting for some reason. It wasn't hurting at every stride, but something was wrong. It subsided, but then kept coming back. At the one mile mark I decided that I could go on, but I may end up hurting my ankle so I turned and decided I would run the mile back, and just call it a day. That lasted only another minute when I said to myself - What am I trying to prove? and walked the rest of the mile back home.

I don't know where this comes from, but I have had my ankle do this before, just not since I started running almost a year ago. It seems like I slept on it weird or something, because I have had this happen before a couple years ago, and by the next day all is fine. I am not overly concerned, but I am concerned a little bit. The only thing that hurts right now is my ego, and self confidence, but tomorrow is a new day and a new run.
