4 Down - 4 To Go

4 miles down, only 4 more training miles to go before race day. I put my 4 easy miles in this morning and it was a really good run. I tried something a little different this morning.

I usually don't eat anything before running in the morning, but have noticed lately that I do much better when I run in the afternoon a couple hours after eating. Most of my races have been in the morning so I have not eaten anything, but I have had a couple afternoon/evening races over the past couple months and I have always done better and felt like I had more energy. I always thought that I didn't do as well in the morning because it was dark, but I am now beginning to wonder if it doesn't have more to do with fuel.

This morning I got up at 4:05 (something magic about those extra 5 minutes) and made myself some oatmeal. Quaker Oatmeal, not instant oatmeal. I ate about 1/4 cup and then waited an hour before going out for my run. I was apprehensive because I too many times have run with too much on my stomach. The run went really good, my stomach felt good, and I do feel like I had more energy. I am going to play around with this a bit to see what I can do.

As for this Saturday, I will eat something, but I will be up at least 2 hours before race time so that won't be an issue. I will probably just have some oatmeal and maybe a banana. They are now again saying that we are supposed to have rain Saturday. We will see, I will take whatever the good Lord gives me and make the best of it :)

  1. Wow! How exciting! Only one more training run before your race. I'll be thinking bout ya bro!

I think something light in the morning is a good idea before a run. I usually do like you did and have a bit of oatmeal with honey, or sometimes a slice or two of peanut butter toast. I always have one cup of coffee too and usually a bit of water. Especially on my long run Saturdays, I make sure I've taken something in.

I hope it doesn't rain on race day, although, you'll do fine either way.

Have a great rest of the week, Tim!

  2. Man! Pretty exciting... I have a great friend running a 1/2 marathon in Myrtle Beach this saturday. Where is your race? I'll keep you in my prayers and will look forward to the blog after the race!

  3. Tim,

That's great that you found something that will work for ya. I usually have a pita before a run. I love Joseph's heart healthy pitas and usually snarf 3 or 4 a day (60 cals each) but it would seem my grocery stores no longer carry them..gah! So I'm in the market for a new 'pre run' food myself. Might have to give that oatmeal a whirl.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that you have a completely dry and smooth run this weekend. I'll be thinking about ya!

  4. Well, they have changed the forecast again - which I knew they would. Now it says the rain will hold off till Sunday! Whooo Hooo!

William - the half I am doing is a local one. A pretty good size local one. It is the Run The Reagan and it runs 5 minutes from my house. I cross the course two to three times on my long run it is so close. It is a parkway that is just over six miles long and they close it all day Saturday for the races, and for people to walk and ride it.

Still looking forward to Saturday - even though my ankle is giving me grief! Now I am not sure if I am going to put my last 4 miler in or not..... hmmm. There is more information on today's post.
