Running magazine of choice

What is your running magazine of choice?

Runners World

Running Times

Or what others do you read or what are your favorites?

I am curious, as I currently subscribe to both of the above but don't read them as much as I should considering that I pay for the subscriptions. If you could only subscribe to one running magazine which one would it be? Runners World, Running Times, or some other?

  1. Since I don't live in the US, I have trouble getting my hands on either. But when I am able to find one it is almost always Runner's World. I have to pay $8 for it though. Sometimes we have Runner's World in Spanish on the shelves here in Mexico, those are only $3 each.

I have been able to read Running Times a few times and don't seem to like it as much. I have read that RW is more for newbies and RT for more advanced runners and competitive types. I squarely fall in the newbie camp.

I would read either if I could get my hands on them.

  2. I've never read Running Times. I got the new Runner's World on Friday and I'm a little disappointed that the weekend was so busy I didn't have a chance to read much of it at all.

I really enjoy it. And I don't know that it's really aimed at newbies. I still have a lot to learn, but I think it covers a broad range of information from newbie to expert.

  4. Runner's World is really focused at newbies. Read more than one year of it, and all the articles repeat again and again. Just like some woman's fashion magazine. I haven't read more than one article out of RW in a year or two.
Running Times is a bit better but now changing their focus a bit.
I like Trail Runner Magazine, they have improved over the last few years.
Ultra Runner is my favorite though of course!

  5. David,
Is there someone in the US that could ship to you? Might be an option..

I agree, RW is geared towards newbies and does tend to repeat itself. However, I do have a subscription and I usually do end up reading it. Sometimes it provides the motivation I need to get my butt out the door:)

M&B is my current favorite. I love the stories and again, it provides such great motivation.

I've not seen RT yet. Sounds like I need to visit Barnes and Noble..

  6. I think I could see how Running Times could be viewed for a little more advanced. It does seem that Runners World is a little more repetitive and it also seems that they are a bit more advertiser based as well.

David: I am sorry you have trouble getting either, like Mar said, do you have someone that could ship it to you? Even if they could ship a few issues at a time it seems like it would be less than $8/issue. Maybe someone that is buying it and reading it already.

Maddy: Sounds like you are a hard core Runners World fan :)

jbone66: Thanks for bringing up Marathon & Beyond as I was interested is finding more options and will have to go check it out.

Kim: Ultra Runner - doesn't surprise me.... maybe one day I would be able to read it and not feel totally incompetent :)

Mar: Thanks as always for stopping by, it always puts a smile on my face when I see your name pop up. :) I like you read for inspiration and so the repeating doesn't always bother me.

Thanks again all for stopping by, good to hear back from you!

  7. I'm going to nip into town and see if I can find a copy of Runner's World in one of our speciality magazine shops. I keep hearing good things about it.

  8. Kassy: that is the way, and it is a bit cheaper too. I kinda like the paper in my hands, even though I am a complete geek!

Good luck in finding it Andrew. I had to look a bit before I found any running magazines in standard stores around here. I can't believe it would be that hard of an item to sell based on all the people that show up at races....

Thanks all for your feedback, a new question coming in a few days! :)

  9. I'm a RW reader. I agree that some of the content does repeat after a year or so, but I usually need the reminder :-)

I picked up an issue of RT a few months ago. It seemed to focus a lot more on competitive running which isn't really why I'm running (I never ran track or XC in High School), however, it was a great introduction to some of the athletes who I watched at the US Track and Field Trials last month.

I'm staying with my RW subscription, however, I may pick up a copy of RT here and there - especially with the Olympics coming up!

Good luck coming back from your injury. Being "on the shelf" sucks, but if you let it heal right and completely you'll be back running without having to stop again.

  11. I could have someone send me magazines, but I rarely think about it. But all of it is moot right now. I will be returning to the US for a year starting in 3 weeks. I will tackle the problem when I move back to Mexico next year.
