I have changed my schedule per this post. Today was my second day in a row, which is the first time I have done this since the time I was injured by doing so. I am feeling fine other than a little nagging pain behind my right knee. The pain is not bad, and gets better by the end of the day. I have been feeling this over the last couple days.
This mornings run went good, and the weather was better than the last three runs. It was 35 degrees and windy this morning, but not as bad as the rain, sleet, slow, and 20 degree weather I have been running in the last three runs.
Tomorrow is a weight training day - no running.

ReplyDeleteI just wanted to comment on running three days a week. I also run three days on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday with Saturday being my long run. Tuesdays I will do intervals, Thursdays I will run at a slower pace and Saturday are 6 miles and longer. So far this scheduled has worked for me. I adpoted this from Jeff Galloway's walk/run program. I say do what works for you. I know there is a lot of controversey about running too many days in a row as opposed to running only three days a week, but so far this has worked for me. As long as you are consistent with your training and eating a healthy diet you should be fine. I will also be running a half marathon on February 17th and I will run the ING Georgia half marathon in March with Christian Runners. Good luck with your training and I'm sure you will do well with your race in February.

What Half are you running on Feb 17th?
I have thought long and hard about running the ING Half in March too, and if all goes well with the Reagan I will. I also wanted to run it with the Christian Runners, but have not been able to get involved with the group because of where I live (Gwinnett) I get all their e-mails, and each time I hear about a group run I want to drive over and do it, but have not had the opportunity since it would take so much out of my day - and I have always been concerned about the pace everyone runs at.

I believe Christian Runners has started a running group in Gwinnett County. Check out our website which list all of the areas where we have running groups. There is always someone who will run at your pace so don't worry about not being able to keep up or having to run alone. We always make new runners feel welcomed!

I have been watching th Gwinnett group and it doesn't seem to be doing anything. It seems that everytime I check the group runs haven't been updated in some time.
I guess I just need to make it over to the other side of town to do a run or two :)

I agree with Val... do what works for you. This ain't rocket science, although some pretty puffed up runners and physiatrists would like to think it is. I think (and I'm just another moron with an opinion) as long as you're getting that quality long run in once a week and doing a couple of others duing the week, you're good. Personally, I'm getting burned out with running 5 or 6 days a week. Just my $0.02 and... that's all it's worth. ;-)

I've been told one of Hal Higdon's mantras is that it's better to enter a race undertrained than overtrained. Honestly, I believe anyone that's been running more than a year, and can run more or less uninterrupted for 3 miles or so, should definitely be able to complete a half. Probably not running the whole thing--more like a walk/run combo--but it's definitely do-able with that kind of "base."
Don't monkey with your training too much and injure yourself in the home stretch of your training!!!

ReplyDeleteI am listening really close to my body, and if anything seems iffy I will back off. I am too close to the finish line, metaphorically speaking to risk that right now.
I've had good luck with 3 and 4 day a week programs myself. I've managed to run injury free for over a year and a half. I've trained for 2 half marathons using a 4 day a week program. I think for me, anything more would be risky.
